![]() ![]() ![]() Key to that is properly using the manual decompression lever system:ġ. The GN400 was designed as an easy starting, gentle running, very simple big single that anyone could kick start, IF the right technique is used. It is unique in that it uses three ignition pickups to trigger the CDI to discharge the coil and create the spark. If you've read back though the eight pages of this thread, somewhere in there I have detailed the complex GN400 ignition system. A weak spark is easily defeated by the compression in the cylinder, so a weak dull color spark is as bad as no spark at all. Spark plug caps easily degrade over time, so I also install a new good quality NGK spark plug cap, and clip the coil lead to the cap back about 1/4". If you get any spark color in the white to yellow color range you have a weak spark likely caused by a fouled plug, bad system ground, corrosion in some ignition connections, possibly a cracked coil housing or bad coil ground connection. What do you get for spark when you kick it over? It should be a bright, fat, violet-blue spark, and with a magneto style system on the GN400 it should easily jump a wide spark plug gap setting. Even after doing all the good basic maintenance it sounds like you've done, if the CDI has failed, which is likely, well good luck. The old brick sized CDI were notorious to fail, due in part to the vibration common to a big single. Should be able to find a manual on a web search. Running out of troubleshooting skills, and would greatly appreciate any input from the pros in here. Pass this bike on to someone who can fix it? I dont know if the low ohm rating to ground on kill switch is indicative of failure.ĭo I just kick like a bitch? Never used kick start, only pull and electric. ![]() Possible CDI failure? It does not seem to be the typical failure pattern that has been shown both on this forum and this thread. I am hesitant to open the valve cover without knowing what I am getting into to see if the cams could have skipped a tooth, because I do not have a manual let alone torque specs.Ĭould the extra 350 ohms over secondary coil cause low enough spark to never fire over? It does seem to be consistent and fairly blue in color. I don't know if spark is adequate, I haven't looked at enough firing sparks to know. I think my multimeter is accurate I am using a fluke 116 with fluke leads that seem to be in good condition. I have also made sure to crack open the valve access ports (actually crack open with a chisel and hammer) and the valves had the slightest play. Secondary | Plug cap - Ground | Range is 15 - 17k, this measured in at 17.35k so 350 ohms over spec. Pulser(P1) | R/G - B/W (Ground) | In range Pulser(P2) | Bl/R - B/W (Ground) | In range Based on the values in the service manual I found all of my magneto coils are good.Įxciter(l1) | B/R - B/W (Ground) | In range No loose connections, magnets still in place. I have done a visual inspection of the magneto/flywheel and it all seems in place. I have unplugged the wire and measured as it enters the CDI, not on the far end of the wire to check for any frayed insulation along this wire. 4 I am unsure if something happened within the CDI to partially ground it making the spark weaker. When I flip the switch off it pulls that to. I am unsure if this is the correct value, but through the kill switch wire on the CDI to ground I am getting 119 ohms. So far I have just the CDI wires remaining, along with the key so it can be used as a kill switch. I have also eliminated most of the extraneous wiring in order to narrow down potential issues. The main jet is slightly larger than stock. Set the carb bowl to what I think is the right height (based on some service manual pages I have found) but have not made a test tube to see actual fuel height. Made sure I can see through all jet orifices and they got blown out with compressed air. I have deeply cleaned the carb, I removed all rubber components and soaked it in card cleaner overnight. So far I have done the normal things when you salvage an old bike. Overall the bike seems to be in good condition, but it does not start. The manual being seemingly impossible to find does not help. This bike has been giving me massive troubles. I have and maintained had quads and stuff growing up (Born in 1999, owned 1986 suzuki lt230e). I have also bought a GN400 as my first bike. Hey everyone! This is my first post here. ![]()
